INTERNET CONNECTIONS
(
The Short Version)
(Updated 04/17/06))

There are three basic ways to get connected to the Internet. All you need is a computer, an Internet
Access Provider and a little knowledge.

DIAL-UP

The original method is still the most popular but loosing ground to the other two.
Basically it connects you thru your phone line, which in-turn is connected to a modem.
You dial-up the Internet. Basic monthly fees run between $9.95 and 25.95.

Down Side: It's the slowest way to get connected and as a result it may take awhile to download
software and music. Connection speed may make it impossible (or atleast difficult) to view video
and some sound files. It ties up the phone line that it uses. Meaning if you're on the internet you
can't be talking on the phone.

DSL / DIGITAL SUBSRIBER LINE

Much faster than Dial-Up. You're always connected to the Internet. Although it uses a phone
line, it doesn't actually tie-up a phone line. Starting around $15.95. Often after an introductory
period cost will average between $29.95 and $33.95 per month. Although with a long term
agreement the price could be as low as $19.95. With the purchase of a device called a router
(installation required) several computers can be connected to a single connection for one price.
Great for viewing streaming video and for any downloads.

CABLE INTERNET / HIGHSPEED

Like DSL you're always connected to the Internet, but it's much faster than DSL. The best method
for downloading -big music and video files and software of any size. perfect for video conferencing. Although introductory specials are available, monthly costs can average $40-$50.

Down Side: You'll have to purchase a cable modem, which needs to be installed, unless your
computer comes equipped with one. It's the most expensive way to get to cyberspace. If cost
is not a problem this is definitely what you want.

WINDOWS or MAC

Because they are so attractively designed and are not as vulnerable to Spyware and Viruses, Apple
Computer's Macintosh models are getting more consideration than they have in years from new buyers
and Windows users. You can buy a decently equipped Mac, called the Mac Mini for around $500. It
doesn't include a keyboard, mouse or monitor, but it can use the accessories you already have from
your old Windows machine. Doubling the memory will add $75 to the cost.

Apple iMac G5 models start at around $1299 and are an even better choice. They use a powerful
processor called the G5, and have a brilliant built-in flat panel screen. But switching to the Mac
requires buyers to master new software, some of which must be purchased seperately.

You can buy a basically equipped Windows PC with monitor for under $500. I've seen several that come
with an 80 gigabyte hard drive. For $75 more you could double the memory and add a DVD recorder.

Get as much hard disc as you can, especially if you plan to store a lot of music or video content.

2 A worm is a self-replicating virus that does not alter files but resides in active memory and duplicates itself. Worms use parts of an operating system that are automatic and usually invisible to the user. It is common for worms to be noticed
only when their uncontrolled replication consumes system resources, slowing or halting other tasks

1 Viruses are self-executing, self-replicating programs. They alter the way a computer operates without the knowledge
or permission of the user. When extracted, viruses may damage files, cause erratic system behavior, or display annoying
messages. The ability to self-replicate differentiates viruses from Trojan horses and other virus-like programs.
